For our second night in Kingston we had dinner at the highly recommended and multi-award-winning Chez Piggy. It was a really cool place, delicious food and a nice atmosphere, with good service and good drinks :). We both just had a delicious salad and a dessert and it was so awesome we wished we'd got another night there so we could go again.
On Friday we took the Thousand Islands cruise from Gananoque. Fortunately, the weather had brightened quite a lot and we were glad we'd waited to do it that morning and not gone on Thursday. It was cold and rather cloudy at first but turned lovely and sunny by the end of the trip.
The thousand islands is actually a collection of over 1800 islands and islets (it's not considered a fully-fledged island unless it supports 2 trees and measures more than 6 square feet) in the St Lawrence River and Lake Ontario, bridging the gap between Ontario, Canada and New York State in the US. The highlight was Heart island, where George Boldt had the island shaped into a heart and built a huge fairytale castle as a gift for his beloved wife. His wife tragically died before the castle was completed, and the project was abandoned so the castle was never finished. It's an awesome looking place and a cute story.
The commentary on the cruise also told us about the many shipwrecks among the islands, the islanders who used their knowledge of the islands to smuggle alcohol during prohibition, and the story of how Thousand Island Dressing got its name :)
After the trip we hit the road again for the final long drive of our holiday, along the 401 to Toronto. Apart from a stop or two for petrol and snacks (can't call it lunch as we refused to eat at McDonalds!) The journey went pretty quickly, and I just amused myself reading the British names of Ontario towns from the map - places like Sydenham, Stirling, Tweed, Peterborough, Whitby, Scarborough, Bridgenorth, Bath, Hastings, Brighton, Battersea, Newcastle village and Manchester.
We got to Jenn's Toronto apartment just after 5pm. Jenn was still at work but we were met by her boyfriend Elliot so we could drop off our stuff. We then returmed the hire car to Union Station, having driven a total of 3040 km in the last couple of weeks. Wjen Jenn came home we all changed and went to Elliot's for a delicious home cooked veggie lasagne dinner and chilled out with beers. Nice to be around friends and chill out with a few days all in one place.
